THIRD SECTION – Ynyshir Brass
Conductor – Rob Burnett
Another Welsh band this morning at Wychavon. Today the band is bringing to light an all too common issue in today’s Brass Band world. It’s great to see feminism coming to the forefront of a traditionally conservative pastime. The march shows off the band’s technical ability and dynamic control. Trombones are powerful and really shine through the darker colours of the band. Trio is lyrical and musically coherent. A good study end to the first piece of Ynyshir’s program – good job.
I’m loving the energy the kit brings to the beginning of this next piece. Style is consistent throughout the band and it suits well. A lighthearted and vibrant cornet line contrasts the deep and powerful lower brass well. Good balance throughout. Energy stays consistent through to the last note. Loved those jazzy flugel entries. Good easy listening music – perfect for this kind of contest. Well done.
”The Water is Wide”, a beautiful traditional air executed beautifully from flugel soloist. The soloist communicates the emotion in this piece very well. Brilliant control and confidence over the harder passages. The band occasionally drowns the soloist but Burnett controls this well. Loving the euphonium and baritone sounds. A couple tuning issues as we reach the last couple of chords but overall a good performance. Well done!
A tribute to the late Judy Garland continues Ynyshir’s performance this morning. You can tell the band enjoys playing this – good energy levels all round. Tempo becomes disjointed at times but is well recovered. The multiple lines are well balanced. Good job on kit!! Lively and upbeat closes the fourth piece in this program. Well done.
Closing their program with my absolute favourite Paul Lovett-Cooper pieces “Dark Side of the Moon” is a brilliant choice to display the bands skills at more complex music. The band could afford to open up their louder dynamics a little. Keep it steady! Think about bringing out those wonderful dissonances a little more. Good work from horns to keep the band on track. Brilliant close to Ynyshir’s program – well done!!!
